Komenda residents notify police of August 13 demonstration

The Concerned Citizens of Komenda Traditional Area have officially notified the Ghana Police Service of their intended demonstration, scheduled for Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

In a statement dated August 5, the group announced that they expect to draw a minimum of two thousand (2,000) concerned citizens from the Komenda Traditional Area and its environs to participate in the protest.

The demonstration will commence at 6:00 a.m. starting from Komenda Township and ending at Komenda Junction.

This notification is made pursuant to Section 1, Clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), which requires that “any person who desires to hold any special event within the meaning of this Act in any public place shall notify the police of his intention not less than 5 days before the date of the special event.”

The group is protesting the government’s decision to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian firm.

They are demanding that the government reverse its decision to import raw sugar and restore the Komenda Sugar Factory’s original purpose of utilising local sugarcane out-growers.

Additionally, they are calling for the annulment of the lease agreement with the Indian company, citing non-compliance with procedural requirements and stakeholder engagement protocols.
