Kuapa Kokoo, has taken another giant step towards solving the health challenges of her farmers within the Sefwi Akontombra district.
The cocoa farmers’ cooperative took its mobile clinic all the way to the forest area of Sefwi Akontombra to screen and treat farmers.
Medical Director of Kuapa Kokoo; Dr. Fred Bedzrah tells rawgist.com about the sad irony where the farmers who produce the cocoa that makes the nation rich are themselves too poor to even afford basic necessities of life.
He explains that these farmers stay in very deep forests away from any health facility. “They lack safe drinking water, educational facilities, health facilities among other necessities”.
He explains that Kuapa Kokoo developed the Mobile Clinic concept to help fete for the health needs of these farmers who supply them premium cocoa.
Over a thousand farmers scattered within the district were screened and treated. Some were also referred to bigger facilities for further treatments including surgeries the cost of which will be borne by Kuapa Kokoo.
“Kuapa Kokoo believes that an improvement in the health of our farmers will reflect in productivity”, he explained adding that Kuapa kokoo has a lot more lined up for the farmers.
He says his outfit has started training community health volunteers to serve as the first line of care within the farm cottages while at the same time rolling out a tele-health facility to coordinate health care activities to better serve the farmers.
