Kumasi High School students screened on campus

Ghana Education News-Breast Care International (BCI) Saturday morning screened students of Kumasi High School at their campus in Gyinyase, a town in the Asokwa Municipality.

Some of the ailments that the students and the town folk were screened for included breast cancer, hypertension and diabetes.

The screening exercise formed part of activities the school has lined up for their Home-Coming program which is a time old students of the institution are celebrated.

This year’s Homecoming entails candle light vigil next week Friday while a health walk and an inter-years football competition planned for the next day with a dinner to follow in the evening at the school campus on Saturday.

The school climaxes all activities on Sunday, the 22nd of September where a thanksgiving service has been planned to offer praise to God for his grace and favor on a school that started with a handful of people.

EDUCATION:

Speaking before the screening ceremony, Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI and Peace and Love Hospitals urged students to be careful with the lifestyles they lead while in school.

Smoking and the consumption of alcoholic drinks, the cancer surgeon noted are things that make people prone to diseases and illnesses.

She asked that despite being boys they take time to examine their breasts at intervals since some cases recorded at the hospital have proven that men can also have infections in the breasts just like what happens to some women.

Dr Wiafe also tasked the gathering to educate their folk who may not have benefitted from the lessons they were learning so they can periodically examine their breasts as well as to check for their general health statuses.

‘’Even though I know Kumasi High is a boys school I decided with the BCI survivors to come here so we can educate you so you could also educate yourselves, your sisters and mothers about breast cancer and what they can do to prevent them from having the disease’’, Dr Wiafe reiterated.

STATISTICS:

According to the BCI Leader a recent statistics released from GLOBACAN, a global cancer federation reports that 4,650 people are known to have breast cancer annually in Ghana.

This figure, the cancer surgeon noted is twice the number the country recorded few years back that stood at 2, 000 cases annually.

This skyrocketing figure, the surgeon said brings home the need for more sensitization drives to ensure the right caution about the diseases is carried out while the available treatments and therapies are also mentioned to the public.

‘’The rate breast cancer is killing our innocent wives and mothers is alarming but early detection and prompt action is equal to the prevention of the disease’’, Dr Wiafe Addai posited.
