Several traders at Kejetia and the Kumasi Central market have demonstrated in protest against a decision to demolish and reconstruct the two big markets in the Ashanti regional capital.
The women’s demonstration is borne of a lack of trust in the City authorities.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has promised to relocate them free of charge for the duration of the reconstruction exercise which seeks to ease congestion at the market and also beautify the area.
The market traders however say the exercise will cause them to lose their spots in the market; a situation they fear will deprive them of their livelihoods.
The KMA has tried on several occasions to assure the women that the reconstruction work is without malice.
