Preliminary investigations into the recent fire outbreak in the Kumasi Central Prison show that the fire was caused by electrical fault.
Ghana Prisons Service’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Francis Agyire Kwakye, told UTV news on Thursday that “investigations are not yet conclusive on the cause of the fire”.
But what rawgist.com’s Kwabena Danso-Dapaah has gathered so far from Fire Service officials indicates the fire was as a result of an electrical fault.
“Investigation will continue”, a source told this reporter.
The fire broke out at the Kumasi Central Prison two days ago, completely destroying property and prompting prison officials to relocate some inmates to other correctional facilities in the country.
Officials decided to transfer the inmates to nearby prisons— the Amanfrom based prison, Ankaful prisons and Nsawam Medium Security prison.
Interior minister, Mark Woyongo told Joy FM the ministry is garnering resources to kick-start activities to rebuild the destroyed building as well as to fully equip officers for future eventuality.
The Kumasi Central Prison fire incident was first case of fire gutting a correctional facility in the country. Many fire outbreaks in public places and institutions have been attributed to electrical faults and arson.
