Lands and Natural Resources Minister nominee proposes the formation of “Water Guards” to protect water bodies

Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah; the President’s nominee for Minister of Lands and Natural Resources says he will do all within his power to stop illegal mining and its associated degradation of the environment.

Appearing before Parliaments Appointments committee January 27th, 2025 to be vetted, the nominee proposed the formation of a force he tentatively called Water Guards to help permanently safeguard water resources in the country against pollution and activities of illegal mining.

Although the former government made use of a taskforce that included the military, the nominee believes more could be achieved with a more permanent body committed to safeguarding the country’s water bodies.

“The military’s deployment is not a long-term solution. They have played an important role, but we need a more efficient, enduring strategy. The condition of our rivers today speaks volumes about the urgent need for change. The military would clear the area, and for a while, the rivers would be protected. But after just six months, the situation would return to where it started,” said Armah-Kofi Buah.
