A Lecturer with the KNUST School of medical sciences, Dr.Okyere Addai Mensah has blamed agitations that usually accompany new government policies on poor government communication mechanisms.
He was commenting on the brouhaha that characterized the implementation of the 17.5% VAT charge on some banking services on Kumasi based Ultimate radio.
The issue stirred lots of controversy over the week compelling government to postpone the charge for more public education.
Dr Addai Mensah however says such issues can be better managed if government’s communication team does its work right.
“It is important to get the people who will feel the brunt of the change involved in the decision making process. I am very sure that if a lot of education had gone on prior to the introduction of this tax, we would not have had this brouhaha that’s been associated with its introduction. I think that the time has come for us as a country to put our priorities right and I think so far as communication goes, the government has made too many errors in its five years of existence”, he said.
He was convinced that the presence of many communicators at the Presidency was an attempt to milk the country dry.
“We have a minister of information, two deputies as well as Ben Malor sitting there . My impression is that it is just a subtle attempt to milk us dry”.
