General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA); Dr. Justice Yankson has called on the state to take a second look at gun licensing procedures in the country.
The Medical Doctor who is also a lawyer, was discussing the recent alleged shooting and killing of two Policemen from the Motor and Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service by a man wielding a registered gun on Joy News’ Current Affairs Programme; News file.
The Officers; Sergeant Michael Dzamesi and Lance Corporal Mohammed Awal – were killed while on operational duties.
The police have been on the heels of the prime suspect; Eric Kojo Duah since Wednesday after arresting three persons in connection with the crime at Kasoa. A GH¢10,000 bounty was placed on his head after he was declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service. Information available to rawgist.com is that the suspect was arrested early today (Saturday) at the Atimpoku bridge in a black Golf car with registration number GW 5972-18 whiles on his way to the volta region.
While Sergeant Dzamesi died on the spot after being fired, Lance Corporal Awal died later at the Police Hospital.
They were said to have signalled occupants of an unregistered Toyota Camry to stop at the Kasoa checkpoint.
But after the driver – suspected to be the arrested – defied their orders, they mounted a chase, which landed them at Aplaku.
It was at this spot that hot exchanges ensued between them. The killer, however, pulled rifle from his car and shot at the unarmed officers.
So far, the persons arrested – Ibrahim Zakaria, Isaac Amissah and Dominic Commey – have been arraigned before court.
Dr. Yankson believes not everyone should be allowed to own a gun. He says the state should reconsider the Gun licensing structures and procedure. He suggested that mental states of potential gun owners be examined.
The medical practitioner also suggested that the Police and the military join forces to embark on exercises to rid the country off unaccounted fire arms.
Immediate past Dean of the GIMPA law School and legal Practitioner; Kofi Abotsi advised Ghanaians to avoid doing politics with crime since crime knows no political colours.
He also encouraged more training for security personnel to enable them handle the growing sophistication in crime.
