Kumasi electrocution: Police Commander warns youth against cable theft

Manhyia Divisional Police Commander ACP Kwaku Buah has cautioned the youth against stealing.

The Police officer was speaking in the wake of the electrocution of a 35 year-old man who died on a high tension pole carrying 33,000 volts of electricity. It is suspected that he died trying to steal cable; a business that has become rife among the youth in the country.

“It is an unfortunate thing, young men shouldn’t die this way”, he lamented and advised the youth to find good jobs to do. He said the police was still investigating the matter.

For his part, Public Relations Manager of the Electricity Company in the Ashanti region; Erasmus Baidoo wondered why anyone would climb a 33,000 volts tower to cut cables for sale. He explained that the power running through the cables are extremely high and is stepped down several times before getting to our homes for consumption.

He suspects the young man has some technical knowledge and perhaps and is not new to the job considering the gear he wore.

The body of the young man identified only as Fatawu; a 35 year old man was found hanging on the pylon in a blue jacket over a pair of jeans, boots and a red cap. The event occurred at Aboabo Extension in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti region.

People living around recount that an explosion around 2 am and screams for help attracted them to the scene. Unfortunately, he had already died when they got there.

The body has since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue.
