The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, together with Management of the University and other related members of staff have inspected ongoing projects to assess the progress of work towards the admission of the first batch of Free SHS graduates for the 2020/21 academic year.
The inspection began with the Prempeh II Library, where facilities have been added to make the Library conducive for learning. The facilities included the Ashanti Cultural Hub, Conference rooms, Library offices, discussion areas, reading rooms, and bookable learning rooms. Other infrastructures include Icy Cup and a Waiting lounge.
Briefing the Vice-Chancellor on the College of Art and Built Environment building complex, Architect Emmanuel Eyiah-Botwe said the complex has Offices, Examination Centers, Exhibition Halls as well as 16 classrooms which could accommodate about three hundred students.
The inspection team further visited the Faculty of Social Sciences where a 5 story-building with auditoria, thirty-eight undergraduate classrooms, 6 Ph.D. classrooms, One Hundred offices, two computer laboratories, and three Seminar rooms is near completion. The team observed that the Graduate Business School is completed.
At the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, KNUST Museum, Maternity Block of the University Hospital, Community Center, Children’s Library and the New Sports Directorate, work was observed to be progressing steadily.
Another infrastructure inspected was the Mastercard Guest House facility and the Nine-storey Alumni hostel building.
The projects are funded by the Internally Generated Fund (IGF) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
KNUST to admit 23,000 extra students in 2020
The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says it is well-positioned to admit more students as the first batch of Free SHS students enter various tertiary institutions next year.
The introduction of the Free Senior High School policy by the government has led to an increase in enrollment in second cycle institutions across the country.
According to management, KNUST has expanded its infrastructure and will be in a position to admit 23, 000 more students in addition to the over 55,000 Students it currently has.
