MESTI Minister Disburses Funds to Boost Sustainable Waste Management, Reduce Plastic Pollution

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has released funds to ten companies as part of the initial tranche of grants under the Establishing a Circular Economy Framework for the Plastic Sector in Ghana (CEF-PS) project.

The initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices and curbing plastic pollution nationwide, marks a significant step in Ghana’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement session held at the ministry’s conference room in Accra, Dr. Murtala Muhammed emphasized the need for responsible use of the funds. He noted that the ministry will be closely monitoring the progress of the beneficiary companies to ensure accountability and results.

“This funding is not just financial support; it is a call to action to build a more sustainable future for Ghana,” Dr. Murtala stated. “We are entrusting these companies to lead the way in reducing plastic waste and transitioning towards a circular economy.”

Mr. Joseph Yeboah, Strategic Partnerships and Engagement Officer at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), highlighted the importance of targeting key intervention areas to prevent plastic waste from entering the marine ecosystem. He confirmed that the ten selected companies, which operate within Ghana’s plastic waste management ecosystem, are the first beneficiaries of the pilot project, which is valued in the millions of US dollars.

He urged the recipients to put the grants to proper use, stressing that many other companies within the sector were also eligible but were not selected. He encouraged them to justify their selection by fostering stronger public-private partnerships and delivering measurable impact.

Mr. Yeboah also commended Dr. Murtala Muhammed for his hands-on leadership, including personally visiting all ten beneficiary companies and overseeing the process that led to the approval of the USD 70 million grant.
