The Asutifi chapter of the local management committee under the mining community development scheme, has been inaugurated by the minerals development fund in kenyasi in the Asutifi north district of the Ahafo region of Ghana.
The committee is mandated to provide financial resources for the direct benefit of mining communities, traditional and local authorities.
The committee was also charged to exhibit honesty, accountability and integrity, professionalism, competence and transparency in the course of its duties.
COMPOSITION OF THE LOCAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
“There shall be established,a mining Community Development Scheme” according to the minerals and mining act section 16.
Section 19 of the act also states;” The board of the scheme shall establish a local management committee for a mining community”.
The local management committee, according to section 19 – subsection (1) of the act, “shall comprise the chief executive of the district Assembly of the mining area,traditional rulers of the mining community, one representative each of minerals commission, mining companies within the district, identified women’s and youth groups”.
The inauguration brought together traditional rulers from kenyasi #1, Ntotroso,kenyasi # 2 ,wamahiniso, members of the Asutifi north district Assembly, Newmont Gold corp,political leaders, members of minerals development fund, youth and women’s groups, Civil society organizations, the press.
The members of the committee are Emmanuel Duah, Hon.Anthony Mensah,Comfort Adjei Mensah, Charlotte Tei, traditional rulers of the mining communities as well as representative from Minerals Development Fund.
Meanwhile, the government of Ghana led by the Ahafo regional minister, Evans Opoku Bobie,presented a cheque of one million cedis as seed capital for the newly inaugurated local management committee.
