Mortuary workers threaten nationwide strike as demands remain unmet

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has issued a strong warning to the government, signalling a possible nationwide strike if their longstanding demands remain unaddressed by November.

Representing mortuary workers across the country, MOWAG is pushing for better working conditions, such as improved wages, a safer work environment, and adequate personal protective equipment (PPE).

According to MOWAG, these issues have lingered since 2019, yet authorities have taken little action.

Richard Kofi Jordan, General Secretary of MOWAG, voiced the association’s mounting frustration, accusing the government of intentionally delaying progress by requesting unnecessary data, a tactic he claims is aimed at stalling negotiations and sidestepping the workers’ main concerns.

Despite multiple outreach efforts to resolve these issues, MOWAG members are still reportedly subjected to unsafe and unhealthy working conditions. The association believes that only a strong, coordinated industrial action will push the government to finally prioritize the welfare and safety of mortuary workers across the nation.

“We cannot strike in the middle of the month. So we are planning towards another week. It could be the end of this month, it could be the first week of next month [November], whichever it is, we will communicate the same to the public and then you understand.

“As I speak to you, the government has demanded certain data from us and we feel that it is a way to delay the process. They demanded certain data from us, which we are providing. But that is not enough for us to say that we are not going to embark on our strike. We will surely strike if what we are asking for is not met within this month.”
