MTN GHANA FOUNDATION EMPOWERS FUTURE LEADERS WITH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 200 DESERVING STUDENTS
Accra, October 03, 2024 – The MTN Ghana Foundation is excited to announce that it has awarded 200 scholarships to students in public tertiary institutions through its Bright Scholarship program. These deserving students will receive full tuition, accommodation, and stipends for a full academic year and during the period of their education in their respective universities.
Speaking at a ceremony to present the scholarships to the students at MTN House in Accra, the CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, advised the beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunity granted to them. He emphasized that the scholarships are not just financial support, but an investment in their dreams, potential, and the promise of a better tomorrow. He expressed excitement to see how each recipient will use the opportunity to further their education, pursue their goals, and contribute positively to society.
The Director for Pre-Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, who was the special guest of honor, commended MTN for the initiative and for creating a platform to help needy students in the country. He urged the beneficiaries to aim high and make good use of the scholarship.
A similar award ceremony was held in Kumasi led by Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager, for the MTN Ghana Foundation.
The MTN Bright Scholarship is an initiative by the MTN Ghana Foundation that provides financial assistance to needy and brilliant students in public tertiary institutions. Scholars are selected annually from all 16 regions of Ghana through a rigorous nationwide selection process, with selections made by an independent panel.
The selections reflect MTN’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Out of the 2499 students who applied, 400 were shortlisted for interviews, and 200 successful students have been selected for the scholarship award including 20 students living with disabilities. Among the recipients, 111 are males and 89 are females.
Various dignitaries attended the MTN Bright Scholarship presentation ceremony, including Lydia Nyarko Dankwah, Director of Academic Affairs at the University of Ghana, Eric Yaw Alade, Head of Student Services and Records, University of Ghana, Nana Baffour Awuah, Director for Pre-Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Executives of MTN Ghana, Bright Scholarship Jury, and NUGS President.
Scancom Plc has had a scholarship system in place since its inception, benefiting over 1000 students. During MTN Ghana’s 20th anniversary in 2016, a reloaded MTN Bright Scholarship was re-launched. During the celebrations, MTN, through the MTN Ghana Foundation, promised to award a total of 300 scholarships over three years.
Considering the impact of the scholarship at the end of the first three years, the MTN Ghana Foundation approved the renewal of the scholarship program in 2021 during MTN’s 25th Anniversary celebration.
