Mr Tweneboah Koduah explaining matters to the chiefs and opinion leaders in Asokwa
The Asokwa Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has for the past two weeks intensified sensitization measures ahead of the upcoming referendum as well as the District Level Elections.
As part of plans the office has engaged stakeholders, opinion leaders, organisations, political parties, persons with disabilites, other identifiable groups as well as persons working with information centres across the municipality.
Led by the Municipal Head of the outfit, the NCCE officials have toured about 50 places including mosques, churches, shopping malls, banks and palaces of chiefs in the Asokwa Municipality.
Explaining matters during last Sunday’s sensitization forum with chiefs and opinion leaders at the Asokwa Presbyterian church hall, Mr Tweneboah Koduah said the 17 December referendum is on two issues and that is to elect assembly members and unit committee members and the second part being the choice to either make the election of assembly representatives partisan or non-partisan.
TASK:
The NCCE head said the public or the electorate are to state what they want to be done at the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) clearly in the referendum.
This, he noted is either by voting ‘YES’, which would mean that the process should be made partisan and in so doing make room for persons to contest the DLE on political party lines.
He also disclosed that a ‘NO’ vote would mean that the status quo be maintained where persons do not need to campaign on party lines to be elected to the various MMDAs in the country.
Mr Koduah took the opportunity to debunk claims that the YES or NO vote is to make way for persons to either be elected as Chief Executives for the various MMDAs or should be allowed to be appointed by the President.
CHIEFS:
Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer newspaper on behalf of the chiefs and opinion leaders at the gathering, Nana Mensah Bonsu, Chief of Kaase commended the NCCE for its efforts.
He noted that apart from gathering Nananom and opinion leaders to speak to them about the referendum, the NCCE had earlier visited each of the chiefs to explain the matters at stake at the upcoming elections.
POLITCAL PARTIES:
Papa Yaw Asare Bediako John, Secretary of the Asokwa New Patriotic Party (NPP) speaking on behalf of all political parties urged the NCCE to intensify the sensitization measures so as to reach all in the municipality with the message about the referendum.
He noted that many had confused the issues at stake and were also passing their confusion to those they can influence.
