Opponents of a new voters register for election 2020 today hit the streets of Tamale to demonstrate against the move to compile a new voters register.
The group calling itself Inter-Party Resistance against the New Voter Register (IPRAN) comprises leading politicians like National Chairman of the NDC; Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Founder and leader of the APC; Hassan Ayariga, Minority leader in Parliament; Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale North; Alhassan Suhuyini and National Chairman of the PNC; Bernard Mornah.
The protest march is dubbed ‘Tikusayi’.
Organizers of the demonstration say it is the first of many to be held across the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has stressed the need for the compilation of new voters register for the upcoming general election adding that the exercise is not a waste of resources.
The EC in its quest to compile a new voters’ register said it is committed to judiciously spending the about GH¢400 million it was granted by Parliament to be spent on the process.
But the opposition parties have stated they will do whatever is within their power to resist the new voters’ register.
