The Overlord of Asanteman, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Saturday morning surprisingly showed up at a clean up exercise jointly put together by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to commemorate his 25th Anniversary as King.

Joining the clean up teams made up of staff and workers at the KMA, security agencies in the metropolis as well as fun clubs and residents of Kumasi, the Asantehene together with the Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah and the Kumasi Mayor, Samuel Pyne partook in the cleaning exercise at Tafo, Bantama, Adum, Kejetia, Asafo, Ashanti New Town and many other routes in the Metropolis.

At the Kejetia market arena, the King of Asanteman called for a pair of gloves and after putting them on took hold of a shovel and symbolically threw into the waiting zoomlion bin vehicle the refuse that had been collected by the cleaning group.

Occasionally waving at the large crowds that followed and others that had gathered at the routes for the clean up exercise the symbolic gesture by the King seemed to have gingered up residents as most were seen cleaning the immediate surroundings of their homes.

Regional Minister:
Speaking to the media, the Ashanti Regional Minister thanked the Asantehene for taking particular interest in the clean up exercise.

He noted that the rationale of the exercise was to create awareness that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was 25 years on the throne as King of Asante.

He said the exercise was also aimed at rallying residents in the metropolis to keep their surroundings clean at all times.

“The ARCC and KMA as a way of showing support for the 25th Anniversary of the King which falls this year was using this exercise to drum home the point of cleanliness amongst the citizenry and residents in Kumasi in particular”, the Regional Minister asserted.

Kumasi Mayor:
On his part, Samuel Pyne, Mayor of Kumasi underscored the importance of keeping the Kumasi Metropolis clean at all times.

The clean up exercise, he noted, was therefore to achieve two things which is to create awareness of the coronation of the King 25 years ago and to also instill in residents the spirit of cleanliness.

The Mayor thanked the security agencies and other support staff and workers as well as residents who participated in the clean up exercise.

“I am hopeful that when we collectively keep our surroundings clean at all times we will have a clean environment and in so doing give our King a fitting 25th Anniversary present 🎁 as he marks it from now till the year ends”, the Mayor stated.
