Ghana Police News-The Ghana Police Service says it has constituted a panel to take disciplinary measures against one of its officers, Lance Corporal Godzi Frederick Amanor for violently beating a woman last week.
It said the panel would “deal with him per police disciplinary procedures.”
In a statement on three significant cases of police brutality that have occurred in the country in the last few weeks, the Police said that the woman who was physically assaulted by Lance Corporal Amanor at the Midland Savings and Loans Company at Shiashie has been treated at the Police Hospital.
The service earlier announced that it had interdicted Lance Corporal Amanor and commenced investigations into his conduct.
A horrific viral video that circulated on social media on Friday showed Lance Corporal Amanor physically assaulting a woman.
He hit the woman’s head several times with an umbrella before landing many blows on her head and face.
Reports say the incident occurred when the woman insisted on receiving her GH¢270 savings from Midland Savings and Loans although staff of the bank asked her to go home and return the following day.
The public expressed outrage over the incident with President Akufo-Addo backing the sanctions meted out to the erring officer by the Police hierarchy.
In a statement, the police explained that“The victim has been contacted, a statement taken and a medical form issued to her and the baby and they have been treated at the Police Hospital. The CID Headquarters is currently conducting further investigation.”
“L/CPL Godzi Frederick Amanor has been interdicted while a panel has been constituted to deal with him per police disciplinary procedures,” it added.
It is unclear whether the reconstitution of the panel to deal with him internally means that he will not be prosecuted any longer.
Upon the recent killing of 7 young men at Manso-Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region, the Police pledged to fully cooperate with the independent committee to be set up by the government to look into the matter.
“On the Manso-Nkwanta incident in the Ashanti Region, the Inspector-General of Police personally visited Kumasi where he joined a government delegation to ascertain the facts of the case and held discussions with major stakeholders namely; Regional Security Committee (REGSEC), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Elders of Council of Zongo Chiefs at Asawase and some of the family members of the deceased persons. The Police Administration pledges fullest cooperation to the independent committee the government is to set up.”
The Police also said that its officer who mistakenly shot and killed a bullion van driver over the weekend has been interdicted pending further investigation.
“Meanwhile the IGP has sent directive to all Police Officers reminding them of the need to uphold the highest level of professionalism, courtesy and respect for human rights in line with the ongoing Transformation Agenda of the Service…In addition, Regional, Divisional and District Commanders have been given firm instructions to intensify supervision and monitoring of personnel in the discharge of their duties.”
