Pay Stipends To Distressed Students In Morocco Now—NUGS President Appeals To Govt.

Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called for urgent government action regarding unpaid stipends for Ghanaian students studying abroad especially those in Morocco 🇲🇦.

His call follows a protest by scholarship beneficiaries in Morocco who have not received their stipends for over 10 months.

The delay, the President noted has worsened their hardships, making it difficult for them to afford basic necessities like food and sanitary products.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Kyeremeh emphasized the union’s commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring the welfare of all Ghanaian students abroad.

Frustration:
The President stated that, “we are very perturbed by the current happenings, but we are pretty much sure this listening government is going to take a quick step toward solving this particular challenge”.

He noted that, “Our students are suffering in Morocco, our students are suffering in the UK, our students are suffering in India, and most of the students on the Students Loan Trust Fund are also suffering”,

“We need funds to facilitate education. Free senior high school is churning out a lot of numbers who are in our tertiary institutions”, the NUGS President poured out.

Details:
Mr Kyeremeh emphasised the need for adequate funding to support education, particularly with the increasing number of students entering tertiary institutions due to the free senior high school policy.

The student body urged relevant authorities to ensure prompt action is taken to address the concerns of affected students and prevent further hardship.

“The only way to keep them going, for them to also get knowledge to develop our country is to get them proper funding to keep them going.

“The Students Loan Trust Fund is one key area that should be looked at. We are calling on the government and all agencies to come and rescue students in the country”, Mr Kyeremeh stressed.

Engagement With Government:
The NUGS President stated that he had had interactions with Chief of staff and the Education Minister since the issue of the Morocco students broke.

He noted that assurances had been given for resolution.

However, he noted that help from government should be advanced in a speedy manner since the students were currently distressed.

“I have met with the Chief of Staff, Hon Frema Osei Opare and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister and i can say assurances were given to mitigating the plight of the Ghanaian students in Morocco 🇲🇦 as well as others elsewhere but it should be urgent and now”, the NUGS President stated.
