The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested six highway robbers.
Deputy Ashanti regional commander,ACP Ampofo Duku, in a press briefing, explained that the armed robbers had robbed unsuspecting passengers on the Ejura-Mampong road a day before their arrest.
The suspects who were arrested on June 15, 2017, had robbed various passengers of their money, mobile phones and other belongings.
ACP Ampofo Duku further stated that the suspects were of Fulani descent and identified them as Ibrahim Mamudu alias Ali Jumah (35 years old), Kofi Azumah alias Adama or Taller (30 years), Issaka Amidu alias Musa (25 years), and Issaka Abubakar (also 25 years). Other accomplices include Seidu Osman, 43 years and Ali Issaka, 42 years.
The Police narrate that on the Thursday 15, June 2017 at about 5:45pm, suspects Ibrahim Mamudu, Kofi Azumah, Issaka Abubakar and Ali, wielding two (2) single barrel guns and a locally manufactured pistol blocked the Mampong- Agona highway at the outskirts of Agona Bipoa and attacked drivers and passengers using the road. Several gunshots were reportedly fired.
The Police further narrate that the suspects on the day of their arrest boarded a mini bus from Agona to Kumasi, on reaching the Police barrier, police on duty upon suspicion, stopped the vehicle. The suspects, sensing danger took to their heels but luck however eluded them as Ali Jumah, Musa, Kofi Azumah and Issaka Abubakar were arrested by the police, but suspect Ali managed to escape.
A search on them revealed eight (8) mobile phones and an amount of Eight Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixteen Ghana Cedis (8,716.00). One of the suspects Ibrahim alias Ali Jumah who is the leader of the group led the police to retrieved two (2) single barrel guns, one locally made pistol and twenty (20) live BB cartridges hidden in a bush.
The Police explain that Ibrahim Mamudu mentioned suspect Seidu Osman alias Seidu Mampiece as the supplier of the weapons and also led the police to the residence of Seidu Osman at Atimatim Taabuom where Seidu was also arrested.
He disclosed that, a search on was conducted in suspect Seidu Osman’s residence, one (1) locally made pistol and two (2) live BB cartridges were found in his room.
He said suspect Seidu Osman also mentioned suspect Ali Sariki a bicycle dealer at Alabar, a suburb of Kumasi as the person who supplies him with the AK 47 assault rifles and other weapons to be given to the Fulani armed robbers to embark on their robbery expeditions, Suspect Seidu Osman later led the police to arrest suspect Sariki at his residence.
He disclosed that, all the six (6) suspects have confessed that suspect Sariki supplies the weapons and ammunition to suspect Seidu Osman who then hands the weapons over to them for their robbery expedition. The Fulani robbers also mentioned that suspect Seidu Osman conveys them in a taxi cab to their robbery scenes and later return to pick them after they finish with their operations.
Meanwhile some of their victims have identified four (4) of them.
All the six (6) suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations while Ali is at large.
