Police Warn Public Of Vehicle-Snatching Syndicate.

GHANA POLICEChief Superintendent Paul Kontoumah, Accra Regional Police Crime Officer, has warned the public to be on the lookout for a syndicate that snatches vehicles, especially taxi cabs and private cars, in the Accra metropolis.

He said an average of four vehicles are snatched in the metropolis on weekly basis by the criminals, and is rampant at East Legon.

Chief Supt. Kontoumah, in an interview with The Ghanaian Times in Accra on Wednesday, said the criminal’s trail their victims to their houses, ambush them and snatch their vehicles.

“For the taxi cabs, about three or four people would hire the services of the drivers at night and send them to obscure places, attack the drivers and take away their cars,” he stressed.

Chief Supt. Kontoumah said as part of efforts to curtail this menace, the police had intensified its day and night patrols and gathering of information to enable them arrest the perpetrators.

“The police would not leave any stone unturned to address this crime in the region for people to go about their duties without fear or panic,” he warned.

Chief Supt. Kontomah advised taxi cab drivers to “make their personal security” a priority, and avoid operating in remote areas especially at night.

Chief Supt Kontoumah urged all drivers to install tracking devices and security alarm systems on their cars, saying “when you suspect you are being trailed by car snatchers, park the car at a public place and report to the police for assistance.
