President Mahama directs reconstruction of bridge to end Aboabo flooding

DSC04985President John Dramani Mahama has announced steps to improve the drainage system at Aboabo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.

He said, this was part of Government’s efforts to end the perennial flooding in the area.

He also announced that work would begin soon to desilt the heap of sand and garbage to allow free flow of water.

Residents in the area blamed the flooding situation on the poor construction of the bridge on the drainage system.

The residents are usually victims of flood whenever there is heavy down pour.

The situation has resulted in a number of deaths and caused damage to several other property.

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly (AMMA), recently demolished wooden structures along the drain and begun a process to de-silt sand and garbage to allow free flow of water.

A recent heavy downpour that hit the Kumasi metropolis, left scores of residents at Aboabo displaced after over hundred houses were submerged.

Angry residents in the area protested the flooding situation and asked city authorities to reconstruct the bridge or face their wrath.

President Mahama, who visited the flood victims, assured them, the bridge would be reconstructed soon.

He said excavators will also be made available to desilt sand particles and garbage from the drain before work on the reconstruction could start.

“I have directed the Works and Housing Ministry to begin work to reconstruct the bridge, so that water can flow easily,” he added.

The President also advised the residents to desist from the practice where garbage and other waste materials were being dumped into the drain.

Meanwhile, some of the residents also held placards with inscriptions; the bridge has killed five people, the demolition would not solve the flooding amongst others.

Mattresses, cooking oil, buckets, food stuffs and other relief items were presented to the over thousand flood victims.
