In line with NDC manifesto promise (Page 17) and the State of the Nation Address, February 26, 2015 (Page 12) for access, improvement in intervention programmes and progressively free education.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Eric Opoku on behalf of the President of the Republic, Tuesday, May 5, 2015 presided over the launch of Ghana’s first ever Nationwide distribution of free Bunk beds and Mattresses to Second Cycle Schools.
The launching ceremony which was held at Sunyani witness the start of the distribution of five thousand Bunk beds (10,000 beds) and Ten thousand (10,000) Mattresses to some of the beneficiary Senior High Schools present. The initiative, through NDC Government is going to provide twenty thousand (20,000) beds and twenty thousand (20,000) Mattresses to forty (40) schools in the region this year.
Delivering his keynote address, Hon. Eric Opoku reminded the Chiefs, Educationists, Students, Media and the gathering that one of the hallmarks of the NDC Government’s development agenda has always been the Education sector.
He further reiterated the commitment of government to introduce the free Senior High School education for Day Students in September, 2015 for only public schools.
He made it clear to Headmasters/Headmistresses of the various beneficiary schools not to bill Students with Bed Users Fees, which in turn bring economic hardship to their parents.
The ceremony was attended by Students from six selected Senior High Schools out of the forty beneficiary schools in the region. Other dignitaries including the Chief of Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Bosoma Asonkrawie, Deputy Regional Minister, Hon. Justice Samuel Adjei, NDC Regional Chairman, Hon. Opoku Atuahene, Regional Education Director, Mr. Kwadwo Osei Asibey, Sunyani MCE, Hon. Kwasi Oppong Ababio and other M/DCEs were present.
