AHLUSSUNNA WAL JAMA’A
PRESS RELEASE: 2ND JULY, 2016
KENNEDY AGYAPONG DEROGATORY COMMENTS CAN ONLY BE FORGIVEN BY GOD
We are saddened by the unsavory and unethical words meted on the chairperson of Electoral Commission, Madam Charlotte Osei by Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong.
Defamation particularly with regards to the chaste of a woman without proofs is morally wrong. In fact, it is against the kingdom of the Almighty Allah.
The position of the Ahlussuna Wal Jamma sect of the Muslim community is very clear. We condemn such derogatory comments, and we know it can only be forgiven by God through sincere repentance.
This is evidenced in the Holy Quran chapter 24:4-5 “those who defame chaste women and do not bring four witnesses should be punished with eighty lashes, and their testimony should not be accepted afterwards, for they are profligates. Except those who repent after this and reform; and God is surely forgiving and kind”
It is the responsibility of Ghanaians to morally support women who have earned higher reputation rather than doing the other way round which could tarnish their image for life.
The Quran also admonishes us to refrain from unwarranted support when one of us err.
Chapter 24:12 says “Why did the faithful men and women not think well of their people when they heard this and say; “This is a clear lie”.
We all have the responsibility to wash this slur casted on her that has a potential of subjecting her and her generation to perpetual trauma.
We should not also be oblivious of the fact that we are in an election year and a least provocation may disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the nation.
We are therefore appealing to the leadership of Parliament to invite the Member of Parliament to render an unqualified apology to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commissioner, women and Ghanaians as a whole.
