Public Services Workers’ Union suspend strike

The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has officially suspended its industrial action following a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC).

The strike was called off on Friday, October 25, after the NLC mandated the union to immediately call off its strike.

The directive came after a session where both the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and representatives of the PSWU presented their cases before the NLC.

The commission had previously summoned the government team, led by the FWSC, along with officials from the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions (MELRP), and the Ministry of Finance, to mediate the ongoing labour dispute.

The NLC’s intervention was prompted by a notice from the PSWU, dated October 14, indicating their intent to embark on an industrial action starting October 21, 2024, due to unresolved issues regarding two institution-specific allowances for their members.

Following the NLC’s directive, both parties have been instructed to resume negotiations concerning these allowances and report the outcomes to the commission.

The NLC emphasized the need for both sides to negotiate in good faith to resolve the impasse, highlighting its critical role in maintaining harmonious industrial relations as mandated by the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
