Members of the Progressive Road Contractors Association (PROCA) have said they have halted the construction works of all roads across the country due to government’s inability to pay a GH¢ 184 debt it owes them.
They say the government has failed to direct funds into the Ghana Road Fund to be used in the construction of roads in the country.
Speaking to Citi News, Vice President of the association, Hammond Larbi said contractors now have to bear the cost of the roads they construct.
“Contractors are now funding road networks in Ghana”.
He complained about the high interest rates contractors have to pay to banks when they procure loans for funding of these projects, adding that some banks have sold properties belonging to their members to settle loans procured from them.
He further stated that some of the members are unable to pay their workers while others have lost their businesses.
In a joint conference earlier this month, the Association of Road Contractors (ASROC) and PROCA threatened to abandon all road projects in the country if the government fails to pay an amount of GH¢ 184 million it owed them.
They stated that several attempts on their part to meet up with the Minister of Finance, Seth Terkper proved futile.
They have therefore decided to abandon all road projects until government gives them what their due.
