Pupils of Salaga 31st December primary school have been taking lessons under tress due to a lack of classroom facilities.
The school, located in the East Gonja District, is forced to close whenever the rains threaten and the pupils must remain home after it remains until their makeshift classroom dries up completely.
This situation, rawgist.com believes puts the lives of the over 247 pupils in the school at great risk.
Most schools in the district face similar challenges. Some children walk three hours daily to Salaga in order to attend school.
rawgist.com’s Michael Amoateng’s visit to the school revealed that four children share a desk. There were not enough desks at the school for the pupils.
Academic performance in last year’s BECE in the district was 17%.
Hon. Asamoah Victor Sunkwa, Assembly man of the area disclosed that, all schools in the district lack teachers, meanwhile several attempts to find solutions to the numerous problems have so far been unsuccessful.
Hon Lukman Aminu the DCE for Salaga has promised to resolved the situation next academic year. ” I know of the situation, we have given a contract of six classroom blocks to a contractor who will complete the project by August 2016″, she told rawgist.com.
He added that” we cannot renovate the old structure now because the cost involved is quite huge and can even build more pavilions”, he said.
