Residents from more than 20 households at Sissala line located in the Sawaba Electoral Area in the Ashanti region fear they could be hit by more flooding this rainy season if drains are not constructed in the area to enable the passage of water.
The inhabitants are blaming authorities for failing to construct drains in the area; a situation they say is causing flooding whenever there is a heavy downpour.
Thursday’s night heavy downpour left most of the residents displaced as most of their properties and other valuables were affected.
The residents say the problem of perennial flooding in the area will worsen if authorities do not put urgent measures to address the situation.
One of the displaced victims said the drain needs a total reconstruction to end the problems of flooding whenever it rains.
According to him, whenever they de-silt the gutter, the refuse finds its way back making it choked and water is not able to flow easily.
“We go through difficulty especially when there is a heavy downpour. My worry is that the rains have just set in and we will go through such challenges”, a resident lamented.
Items including Television sets, refrigerators and other electrical gadgets have developed faults because they were submerged in water. The residents said, they had spent the whole night scooping the water from their rooms and houses.
But they have attributed the cause of the perennial flooding to the absence of well constructed drains.
The residents are therefore appealing to authorities at the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly (AMMA) to construct drains in the area to avert the effect of the flooding.
Though the residents are appealing for help, they are however threatening to boycott the upcoming district and unit committee elections as well as the 2016 general elections if the problem remains.
