Nestle’s Milo, Green and Clean’s bottled air and the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 are among nine products to receive a gong at this year’s Shonky Choice awards in Sydney.
In its 11th year, Choice said the awards revealed the worst-performing products and services that have misled, or in some cases broken the law.
Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said some of the biggest brands were continuing to sell lemons.
“Nine companies have walked the yellow carpet here today,” he said.
“Top of the list, Samsung, second year in a row, this time for their Galaxy Note 7, [which] has a dangerous habit of catching fire.”
In response to its award, Samsung Australia said it had recalled about 81 per cent of its Note 7 smartphones in Australia as a result of the identified fault.
“Samsung products are rigorously tested before being released for sale,” a spokesman said.
A family favourite, the drinking chocolate Milo, was also criticised with Choice rejecting Nestle’s claims it was a “core dairy product”.
Choice said at 46 per cent sugar, Milo’s four-and-a-half-star rating should be downgraded to one-and-a-half star, describing the product as “delicious chocolate dirt”.
Nestle said it rejected the assessment made by Choice and said the Milo health rating “is completely in line with both the Government’s Health Star Rating system and the Australian Dietary Guidelines”.
