Small- scale miners in Obuasi are accusing the inter-ministerial taskforce of allegedly conniving with illegal miners to trespass into AngloGold Ashanti’s concession.
The aggrieved group fears the conduct of taskforce members could lead to serious environmental consequences, if government fails to act.
General Secretary of the miners, Rufus Borry, says members are prepared to expose the security personnel.
Government set up the inter-ministerial taskforce about two years ago to help clamp down on illegal mining in various parts of the country.
Though the taskforce seems to have made some progress in the fight against the menace, small-scale miners in Obuasi say the taskforce takes money from the miners and allow them to extract gold.
Rufus Borry alleges he has had to turn down a request by some members of the task force to lure him into the illegality.
Residents of Obuasi are worried about the lack of a mining policy to properly integrate the sector into the national economy.
At a multi stakeholders’ forum on small scale mining, participants called on management of Anglogold-Ashanti to officially cede part of its concession to small-scale miners.
