Young rapper, Strongman has tongue lashed the VGMAs over cronyism in their selection of works and artistes for awards.
“So far as your manager is on the VGMA board, you can do any trash and still be there”, he says.
He was speaking to Kwesi Kumah Ntim aka Papa Sey on Maxx All Access on Radio Maxx in Takoradi.
Strongman outdid Teephlow to win the Next Big Thing; a musical reality show.
He criticized Teephlow’s nomination among several others including Wisa who was nominated for an award despite his indecent exposure of his genitalia on stage. He questioned why Wisa would get a nomination while Bisa is dropped over the use of the word “forkin” in his song “Brother Brother” which turned out to be a nationwide hit. He believes people like Teephlow got nominations because of the presence of their managers on the board since in his opinion, they are not doing anything musically great. “ If I had my manager on the board, I would be there too”, he told Kwesi Kumah Ntim.
He however upheld Kofi Kinata’s nomination.
When asked if MUSIGHA would have done a better job at hosting the awards, he answered in the negative saying they would have been worse off. “Obour would have just distributed the awards to his friends”.
According to the rising rapper, the only time you get nominations are if your song becomes a hit in ACCRA and if your manager is on the board; situations he believes takes away from the awards.
He says however that he remains focused on the business side of music and not the awards though he wouldn’t reject it if nominated.
Already, Ghana’s rap industry top dawg; Sarkodie says Strongman is a true reflection of his beginning and has been putting in efforts to help his rise.
