Black Stars caretaker coach Maxwell Konadu has revealed that tweaking the team’s approach was key to winning their 2015 AFCON qualifier against Guinea in Tamale on Wednesday.
The Black Stars won by three goals to one but the away side proved difficult to deal with but unlike their first meeting in Casablanca on Saturday 11th October, they could not find easy access to the Stars goal and Konadu stated that he and his technical team had studied the game’s patterns and responded aptly by throwing on midfielders to keep the Guineans in check.
“Tactically, we saw that we were losing the midfield battle so we spoke about it at half time and we decided to recapture that area. We did not want to lose it to them.
But it got to certain points when the Guineans dominated so that was when we threw on Edwin Gyimah, Mubarak Wakaso and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and it paid off,” the coach said after the match.
The coach was also grateful to the fans who came to the Tamale Stadium to cheer the team and also praised his players for the victory.
“I would like to thank the fans who came here. They have really surprised us and they were behind us even when things were tough on the match.
The boys played their hearts out and what happened today has taught us all that hardwork was important in winning matches. It was not easy but we held ourselves together and sailed through.”
Ghana now move to the top of qualifying Group E with 8 points while Togo has 6 with Uganda and Guinea on 4 points each.
