Tamale Teaching Hospital: Doctors suspend emergency, outpatient services over Minister’s conduct

Tamale Teaching Hospital

Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have indefinitely suspended all emergency and outpatient services in protest against what they describe as unjustified verbal attacks by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini.

This action was agreed upon during an emergency meeting held by the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) on Wednesday, April 23, shortly after issuing a statement denouncing the treatment of staff during the Minister’s visit to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit on April 22.

The doctors announced a halt to all outpatient services, including general OPD, antenatal, specialist, and pediatric clinics. However, care for inpatients already admitted will continue until their safe discharge.

The association is demanding full, unconditional apologies from both the Minister and the MP to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa and the entire hospital staff, particularly those in the Emergency department, before resuming suspended services.

In addition, the doctors have outlined critical logistical needs, such as reliable water and power supply, continuous oxygen availability, and immediate access to basic clinical supplies. They also seek diagnostic and intensive care equipment, including MRI and CT machines, ventilators, and mobile X-rays.

DATTH further warned it will pull out of any unsafe work environment and has called out media outlets for biased reporting, demanding public retractions and apologies.
