Tension is brewing within the National Democratic Congress in Techiman over allegations that the Municipal Chief Executive has been using a hit squad to terrorize his opponents within the party.
Members of the party say the MCE, Philip Oppong Amponsah has been involved in the beating of four different people within the party; the latest being the party’s communication director for the Techiman South constituency, Mustapha Muhammed.
Mustapha tells rawgist.com he was beaten by thugs over a disagreement he had with the MCE. He says he, together with some other party members went to the MCE to solicit money for a party event in Accra. The MCE’s refusal to give them the money however generated a misunderstanding.
Mustapha was later ambushed at his house by some members of the party led by the Deputy youth organizer of Techiman South Constituency of the party, Kwasi Atipoe who beat him till he had a swollen face and a cut under his right eye. He narrates that his assailants, numbering five, warned him not to be rude to the MCE again after giving him the severe beating.
He says he has since reported the case to the police who say they are investigating.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Philip Oppong Amponsah has however dismissed the allegations. He says he has nothing to do with the assault on the Communications Director, but also adds that the victim has been trying to soil his name, hence his several attempts to implicate him in the violence.
“Personally I am not involved and have no hand in it. You can come and investigate my background and see if I am capable of such a thing”, the MCE said adding that he is a human rights activist who has no motive to assault anyone.
He also believes Mustapha is against his appointment as MCE and is doing all he can to get him off that position.
Some party members who are not happy with the conduct of the MCE also attribute three other gang-style beating of dissenting party members to the MCE who they accuse of dividing the party.
