Prof. Kwaku Asare; a Fellow with CDD-Ghana says he and many others who looked up to the President as a champion of Human Rights feel betrayed.
He was speaking on Joy FM’s current affairs talk show; Newsfile about the matter of the ‘forced’ retirement of the Auditor-General; Mr. Daniel Domelevo.
Prof. Asare insisted the treatment meted out to Mr. Domelevo taints the President’s Human Rights legacy.
The Auditor-General; Mr. Daniel Yao Domelevo is being pushed into retirement after being forced to proceed on leave last year.
The President insists documents available to him suggests that Mr. Domelevo has reached his retirement age.
There is currently a standoff between the Auditor-General and the Audit Service Board over his nationality and date of birth.
Prof. Asare believes the standoff borders on a wrong notion by the Audit Service Board that it can control the Auditor-General. “The Auditor-General is not subject to the Audit Service Board. He is not subject to any authority” he insisted and encouraged members of the board to read articles 187,188 and 189 carefully to gain better understanding of the powers of the Auditor-General.
He said the considering other issues including the ousting of the former EC boss; Charlotte Osei from office, the President is portraying that he has a problem working with heads of independent bodies not appointed by him.
He called on the media not to allow the matter to die.
Meanwhile, Civil Society groups in the country have criticized President Akufo-Addo to retire the Auditor-General; Mr. Daniel Yao Domelevo.
