The University of Health Allied Sciences (UHAS) division of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has pledged to join the Organised Labour strike starting October 10, following a resounding majority vote.
In a poll conducted on October 8, UHAS faculty members overwhelmingly supported the strike, with:
– 262 eligible voters
– 115 votes cast (43% turnout)
– 104 yes votes (90.4%)
– 11 no votes (9.6%)
This decisive outcome underscores UHAS-UTAG’s commitment to solidarity with Organised Labour and its determination to press for action on critical national issues, including the galamsey menace.
“Following the request by NEC for each branch to conduct polls to decide whether UTAG should call a national strike in support of banning mining in forest reserves, farms and rivers, TAG-UHAS request its Branch Independent Electoral Commission (BIEC) to conduct the polls.
“The voting was conducted on the 8th of October 2024, using Google Forms online mode. The polls started at 8:00 a.m. and closed at 2:00 p.m. Security measures were taken to ensure the elections were free and fair, avoiding multiple voting and accounting for all votes.
