A strong water overflow over a bridge along the Wechiau, Lassia -wa road has completely destroyed the road beyond use. The residents explained that this sad event happened in the early hours of Wednesday May 20, 2020.
Mr. Isaac Chireh, one of the residents who shared some of the challenges said “over 40 farms with well growing crops such as maize, yam, and rice are all swept off by the flood.
He adds that, this resulted after over five hours heavy down pour.
Mr. Isaac said though the spillage is a yearly occurrence, this year’s is more serious than the previous years.
The assemblyman of Lassie-Tuolu electoral area, Hon. Michael Arah Sei-uu appealed to NGOs, philanthropists, the district assembly and the government for immediate intervention. He said the deplorable state of the road has a great negative effect on many. He said, access to the district capital, more importantly the district hospital is now a death trap as one has to struggle through the strong water waves with deep unseen potholes.
The Assemblyman also said that, business transactions between the two major communities (Lassia and Wechiau) have grounded to a halt and added that workers at the district health directorate, district assembly and Ghana Education Service could not risk using the road to work.
Dorwo Paul, a resident and also former unit committee chairman for the Lassie-Tuolu electoral area in an interview said communal labour should be mobilized for immediate action during such natural happenings.
He added that, civil society organizations, individuals and the government should come in to provide a remedy to the unfortunate situation.
