Voltic (GH) Limited, as part of the International Women’s Day Celebration Thursday screened 300 women within the Ashanti region for various ailments and also registered them for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The women who are plastic waste collectors were also given specialized tools to aid them pick waste more effectively.
Public Affairs and communication Manager at Voltic; Joyce Ahiadorme congratulated the women for their contribution to the cleanliness of the city. She reiterated her company’s commitment towards the provision of the needed support to help make the environment a sustainable one.
“As a business, we are driven to ensure a sustainable waste management solution in the country. This informs voltic’s emphasis on recycling as defined in our sustainability priorities. Because recycling starts with proper waste collection usually done by these waste pickers, we are here today to appreciate and empower the women who play an unsung role in meeting this agenda”, She told rawgist.com’s Bernard Buachi.
The event was organized in partnership with Technology without Borders (TWB); a Kumasi based NGO, and the Hepatitis B Foundation of Ghana.
Edmund Arthur Brown; a representative of Recycle Up stated that “women waste pickers are marginalized despite their hard work to boost recycling efforts”.
Many of the women waste pickers were extremely excited about the programme. They were amazed that their contribution had been recognized. Many of them say they survived solely on picking plastic waste and selling; a trade that has helped them looked after their families.
