Water body polluted by illegal mining activities in the Wasa Amenfi Central District

Residents of six (6) communities in the Wasa Amenfi Central District say their sources of drinking water have been destroyed by the activities of illegal mining.

The communities include Kyeikrom, Nantiedi, Kwadwokrom, Soroano, Samfifire, and Kwaku-Buah in the Wasa Amenfi Central district  near Sefwi Bekwai.

Disgruntled residents of the affected communities say they are alarmed at the rate of illegal mining activities in the area especially during a time that a lot of resources have been invested in stopping the practice.

Some of the residents, mainly farmers told Awuku Addo Okyeame of radio Bibiani that the case in Sefwi Soroano is especially alarming and is spearheaded by some stalwarts of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

They appealed to the government to intervene and call the perpetrators to order.

The assembly member of the area Mr Yaw Okrah confirmed that the galamsey is indeed ongoing and is being perpetrated by government officials.
