The issues of the Ghana Music Right Owners Association may be bigger than meets the eye as the interim management team setup by the Human Rights Divison of the Acrra court has faced its first wrath from members at their first meeting.
According to a report by Adeyemi Victor of Ghanaweb, “a large number of Ghanaian musicians have threatened that they are ever ready to ‘pick up arms’ to fight against any individual or group of persons who tries to amass wealth at the expense of the poor musicians.”
According the report, a section of the musicians did not take it lightly as they found issues under discussion irrelevant. It is said that most of the musicians present anticipated discussions would focus on the long time challenge of music royalties and how it would be distributed which was not the case.
“The musicians stressed that instead of the organizers to discuss matters such as the distribution of royalties to members, they rather spoke on irrelevant issues, and this sparked tension.”
In a bid to calm nerves, the Vice President of the Music Council of Ghana, Akosua Agyapong, advised the musicians to stay calm and as the council was formed with the aim of finding solutions to some of the problems facing the industry.
Some of the musicians in separate interviews stated the government had failed to come to the aid of the ‘dying’ musicians, adding that, “this time around we are ready to pick up arms and fight for our rights, irrespective of the consequences.”
