Commercial Drivers at the newly developed Kejetia are very worried about the lack of parking spaces there.
They are also accusing the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of using the entire area for shops in spite of original plans that included an elaborate vehicle terminal.
They say the KMA’s task force and military men are harassing them at every turn. “They accuse us of parking at the wrong place and extort money from us” they told www.rawgist.com’s Joana Somiah in an exclusive interview.
They revealed that the situation is affecting their business badly and called on the KMA to swiftly find a solution.
Many residents of Kumasi including the drivers are also complaining bitterly about traffic congestion at Kejetia; an age-old problem the re-development was expected to solve.
The initial plans of the proposed terminal made adequate provision for a vehicle terminal. It seems however that most of those spaces have also been converted to shops; a situation the drivers and other people who ply their trade at Kejetia say is making life difficult for them.
Meanwhile former Deputy Ashanti regional Minister; Joseph Yammin has also lamented the conversion of vehicle spaces into shops. He says it is enough shame that the KMA has not been able to allocate shops, leaving the place dormant many months after its opening. He wonders what else the NPP administration can do if they are unable to peacefully allocate shops to traders and called them “super incompetent”.
