The Ghana Meteorological Service has indicated that city authorities, and disaster management agencies in the country are to blame for the disaster which has claimed over a hundred and fifty lives in the capital Accra as the service gave a clear warning of the magnitude of the storm ahead of the torrential rains.
Speaking to Ultimate fm’s Eno Safo on Thursday on the Top Issue, head of research at the Meteorological Service, Charles Yorke stated categorically, “The weather warning was given at 17:38 GMT on the 3rd of June, 2015.”
He lamented, “You give warnings and people do not even care whatever you are going to say. People do not even take warnings seriously.”
Mr Charles Yorke was also livid about the Ghanaian culture of dumping waste into drainages and building in water ways, conditions which have been cited for the perennial flooding in the country.
He however indicated that there would be no other down pour of such magnitude in the coming days.
“We are in the peak of the rainy season in June and we expect to get more rains but we don’t anticipate rain fall intensity that is comparable to this one especially in the southern sector and the coastal belt.”
Mr Yorke assured that his outfit will keep issuing the warnings but emphasized that it behoved Ghanaians to heed the caution.
