The acting President of Abetifi Tradition Council in the Eastern Region, Nana Akyemfo Asiedu Agyeman is beating the war drum as he psyches his people up for a showdown with the Fulani herdsmen next month.
He has also made a clarion call on all Kwahus residing outside the area to prepare themselves when going for this year’s popular Kwahu Easter festival “because we shall fight with our blood for our lands come this Easter”.
“Those who have registered guns should come along with them, those who have cutlasses must come along with it, those who have batons must come along with them and those who have any weapons must come along with them because on the Eastern Monday, we shall enter the forest and drive away Fulani herdsmen and kill their cattle,” he declared.
Nana Akyemfo Asiedu Agyeman made the call in an interview with Onua FM’s Yensempa hosted by Kwame Karikari on the preparation for this year’s Easter festivities.
He further stated “the event will start on Saturday where all the people will wear red bands and walk on the streets of Kwahu and its environs to register our displeasure that what Agogo is going through is the same in our areas”.
Nana Akyemfo Asiedu Agyeman who is also the Adontenhene of Kwahu Traditional Council rejected claims that the chiefs are in bed with the Fulani nomads.
“Some people think we have taken some money from the Fulanis and allowing them to destroy farmlands, water bodies and also kill our people so because the Easter is where we can get all the indigenous to the area, we shall use the opportunity to undertake such exercise”.
Asked whether government was aware of their intention, the acting President said “since the era of Rawlings, several attempts have been made to drive them yet it did not yield any results”.
He claimed the herdsmen have been attacking residents with sticks, guns and cutlasses in the bush.
“So we must also carry the sticks, cutlasses and guns to face them”.
The in-coming Eastern Regional Minister, Madam Mavis Ama Frimpong when contacted explained that all the people in the region are against the Fulani issue in the region and the Regional Coordinating Council was launching operation cow leg Monday to drive the nomads away.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Angwubutuge Awuni told Onua 95.1FM that he had “spoken with the entire chief of Kwahu to calm down since the police are capable of handling the issue so if they will take the laws into their own hands to go and kill and drive them away, they should go ahead”.
The Fulani herdsmen have been in the news for years for various bad reasons including alleged robbery, killing of residents and destruction of farmlands.
