Ghana Agriculture News-The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has charged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Agriculture to discharge their duties devoid of politics.
The Minister said reports that some directors with strong affiliations to certain political parties were working hard to sabotage the activities of the current administration were very unfortunate and must therefore be discarded.
Addressing a Staff durbar at Cape Coast and Sekondi in the Central and Western Regions as part of his regional working tour to the two regions, Hon. Owusu Afriyie Akoto observed that “the agricultural sector was very critical to the transformation of the country’s economy and must therefore not be politicized”
According to him, the Planting for Food and Jobs programme is for the benefit of every Ghanaian devoid of political affiliation.
“It is unfortunate that we continue to hear reports that some of you are being very lackadaisical towards the programme. This is healthy because at the end of the day it is the people that will suffer and eventually this will affect the government’s effort at transforming this economy” the Minister observed.
He said unlike other regions, he was very disappointed at the attitude of some directors in the Central and Western Regions who have deliberately refused to allow farmers to benefit from the government’s efforts.
“We are pumping such huge sums of monies into this programme just to support our farmers and improve their economics conditions. It is sad some of you have decided to sabotage it!” He noted.
Hon. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto therefore warned the directors to be cautious of their actions, adding “anyone who thinks he cannot be part of the transformational agenda is free to exit”
