We’ll review and improve free SHS, cancel double track – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has announced that his next administration will review and enhance the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) policies.

Presenting the party’s manifesto at Winneba on Saturday, Mahama emphasised the need for reforms to ensure these educational programmes are more effective and beneficial for all Ghanaians.

Mahama acknowledged the importance of the Free SHS and TVET initiatives but pointed out several areas where improvements are necessary.

He highlighted issues such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and the need for better quality education.

He therefore noted that his administration will for instance cancel the double track system.

“We shall review and improve the free SHS/TVET policy through stakeholder engagement,” he stated, adding “We shall Guarantee the timely disbursement of capitation grants based on the needs and resources of the schools. We shall integrate the Free SHS Secretariat into the Education Directorate for better oversight.”
