Ghana News-The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwesi Mensa Duku says the Police can only win the war against crime when it has the support of the media.
Addressing the media in his first public engagement in Kumasi to outline his vision for the region last Wednesday, the commander said practitioners possessed the potency of collaborating with the Police to curbing crime since it has the greatest access to information.
Information, DCOP Duku stated is the lifeblood to effective policing, adding the administration needs same to deal with crime.
He, therefore, urged the media as well as the public to religiously share information they have with the Police so as to enable them deal with crime and robberies.
STATISTICS:
Quoting from statistics available to the Police Command, Mr Duku said the Ashanti Region has a population close to 5million, adding this forms about 19.4% of the total population in Ghana.
He noted that the regional population as against Police population is deficient in terms of the UN standard of Policing ration of 500-1(One) policeman.
The region, the commander revealed recorded a decline in its crime rate last year as it had 6.5% reduction to the rate in 2016.
DCOP Duku said the current calm atmosphere in the region is due to the efforts of the public as well as the Police as the two recognizes security is a shared responsibility.
MEASURES:
The Regional Commander has urged driver unions who are operating at traffic intersections to cease their activities forthwith since it is the cause of the unimaginable traffic congestion in the metropolis.
He announced the deployment of Police to stop these illegal activities, especially those who are operating from the Abrepo and Apire areas in the Region.
DCOP Duku asked that the public especially the youth use laid down procedures to get redress for any infraction they suffer in the hands of the Police.
The Police, he noted has internal mechanisms to deal with erring officers but said the command will deal ruthlessly with any person or persons who will seek to lay ambush on Police stations and posts to torment its men.
