Workshop on Records Management, Digitization and Institutional Repository Held

ug-workshopA three-day workshop on Records Management, Digitization and Institutional Repository has been held at the Ghana-Korea Information Access Centre at the Balme Library of the University.

The workshop which was on the theme; Providing Practical Guidance Collection Programmes, was to provide hands-on experience to Librarians, Records Managers and Researchers in document preparation, digitization techniques and the management of institutional repositories.

At the opening ceremony, the University Librarian, Prof. Ellis Badu, in a welcome address explained that, the positive feedback received on the success of last year’s workshop prompted the organizers to hold another one this year. He noted that this year’s workshop would have more practical sessions, adding that participants would be provided with progressive knowledge, involving digitization and publishing digitized information.

In an overview of the Workshop, the Deputy University Librarian, Ms. Gifty Boakye, noted that participants are expected to be equipped to lead records management and digitization projects in their various units and departments as well as help implement Institutional Repository Policies.

The Head of the Academic Computing Unit, Mr. Barfi-Adomako Owusu gave an overview of the workshop and introduced participants to the process of digitizing documents, as well as digitization techniques. He also took participants through the University of Ghana’s digitization processes and the various equipment used in digitizing documents.

The workshop which was being organized by the Balme Library in collaboration with the Academic Computing Unit and the University Archives was under the sponsorship of the Office of Research Innovation and Development (ORID). Resource persons form the organizing units made presentations on the topics; Records and Document Management by Mr. Leo N. Woode, Head of UG Archives; How to Start an Institutional Repository Project Presentation by Mrs. Emelia Agyei and Mr. David Odjeawo, both of the Blame Library; Institutional Repository and Metadata presentation by Mr. Henry Agbodza, Academic computing unit, UGCS, Mr. Abednego Corletey, AAU and Mrs. Gladys Kwadzo, Blame Library.

Participants at the workshop were drawn from various departments and units in the University of Ghana and from other sister Universities. Certificates of participation were presented to participants at the end of the workshop.
