Young people at higher risk of mental depression as a result of social media

The use of social Media these days has become an aspect of the modern life that cannot be excluded, most especially in the lives of the youth.

A report by Child Online Africa, a non-governmental institution states that social media usage is set to adversely affect our mental health.

The report issued by the organisation estimates that 5.6 million active social media users in Ghana are at a risk of suffering various degrees of mental disorders as a result of reduced social media interactions.

In an interview with the Chief Executive officer of Child Online Africa Awo Amenyo, she indicated that young people are of higher risk to some of these mental disorders especially depression, due to the fact that young people are more active on social media than the adults.

‘’The Potential of a young person to withstand pressure for instance bullying online is lower compared to an adult withstanding pressure in a digital space,’’ She said.

She therefore advised the general populace to use social media for beneficial purposes and not hide behind social media to hide depression which might result to mental disorders.
